Distracted Ontario Drivers - Are you ready for October?
As you know (or if you didn't, you know now), there's a new law coming into effect in October, 2009.
The police say they will be a little lenient during an 'awareness period', but why wait?
Why not start getting used to it now?
Do you have your hands-free device yet?
So, you CANNOT USE handheld:
- cell phones
- Blackberries,
- iPods
- MP3 devices
- Portable Playstation devices or Gameboys
- No viewing of display screens on those devices
- No looking at your laptop on the next seat, and no fooling around with your DVD player
- OBVIOUSLY, no texting and no emailing while driving
If you have to use your hands (while you're driving) you CAN'T use it.
Handsfree devices, such as Bluetooth, will be allowed.
Calls to 911 are allowed.
Voice activated phone calls are allowed.
GSP systems that are dashboard-mounted, are allowed.
(you can't use a GPS system that requires you to hold it)
If you cause an accident while using your cell phone, you could be charged with careless driving or dangerous driving ... and worse ... you could take a life.

Start now. I've been pulling over when the phone rings, and it's been working just fine, since I haven't been able to find a bluetooth that actually stays in my ear. Until that happens, I'm doing my best to get used to going handsfree.
Keep yourself and your clients safe.
Go handsfree, or let your office take the calls until you're out of the car.
